Canva to Print-Ready PDF

Canva is a great design tool — but its defaults are built for screens, not presses. Five minutes of setup prevents the two problems we see most from Canva files: shifted colors (RGB) and white slivers at the edges (missing bleed).

1. Set Up Your Document With Bleed

  • Best method: on the Canva home screen choose Create → Custom size and enter your final size plus 1/4" total (0.125" per side). For an 8.5" × 11" page that is 8.75 × 11.25 in. Extend background art to the very edge, and keep text at least 3/8" from the edge.
  • Then turn on File → Settings → Show print bleed so Canva draws the dashed cut line. Anything past the line gets trimmed; anything inside 3/8" of it is safe.
  • Already designed at final size? Just turn on Show print bleed, stretch backgrounds past the dashed line, and use the Crop marks and bleed download option in step 2. Canva can’t add bleed without adding crop marks — that’s fine, our prepress replaces Canva’s marks with our own.

2. Download the Right PDF

  • File → Download (the Share button at the top right has the same Download entry).
  • File type: PDF. Under Presets choose Print — Digital is screen resolution.
  • Color profile: CMYK if you have Canva Pro. Free Canva only exports RGB — we’ll convert it automatically, but very bright blues, greens, and oranges will print noticeably duller than your screen. If exact color matters, a paper proof is the safe check.
  • Open Advanced Settings and switch on Crop marks and bleed and Flatten PDF.
  • All pages in one PDF, in reading order (front cover first).

Screens show Canva’s layout as of September 2026. Canva moves menus now and then, but the option names stay the same.

3. Images: 300dpi Means At Print Size

  • Photos should be roughly 300 pixels per printed inch: a 3" × 2" photo needs about 900 × 600 pixels. Canva won’t warn you — if an image looks soft when you zoom in, it will print soft.
  • Avoid stretching small images to fill large areas.

4. Fonts

Good news: Canva embeds fonts automatically in Print-preset PDF downloads. Nothing to do here.
