Paper Cut to Within a Thousandth of an Inch

Digital presses don’t grip the sheet the way an offset press does. They position each sheet by measuring from its lead edge. When the sheet flips to print the back, the opposite edge becomes the lead edge — so if the sheet is even slightly short or long, the back prints out of line with the front by exactly that amount.

That’s why we don’t rely on pre-cut paper. We buy paper by the pallet — typically 60,000 to 80,000 pounds on hand between uncut pallets and cut press sheets — and cut every sheet to exact press size on our 2024 Itotec SC100Z cutter, typically within a thousandth of an inch. The result: page numbers, margins, and backgrounds that line up front to back.

Why exact sheet size keeps front and back printing aligned A digital press places the front image measured from the sheet's lead edge. When the sheet flips to print the back, the opposite edge becomes the lead edge. If the sheet is cut to the exact size, the front and back images line up. If the sheet is short, the back image shifts by the same amount. Capability Questions

Where is Short Run Printing located?

3128 West Thomas Road, Suite 201, Phoenix, Arizona. Every job is printed, bound, and trimmed in our shop and shipped UPS nationwide, or picked up in Phoenix.

What printing equipment do you use?

Five Ricoh Pro C9500 digital color presses, two C.P. Bourg BB3102 perfect binders, a C.P. Bourg BM-e and a Standard Horizon SPF-200L for saddle stitching, a PBS coil forming and inserting line, a Duplo Ultra 200 UV coater, and Itotec SC100Z, Mohr D80 Plus, and Titan 200 cutters.

Why do you cut your own paper?

Digital presses register each sheet from its lead edge. When the sheet flips to print the back, the opposite edge leads, so a sheet that’s even slightly short or long throws the back out of line with the front by that much. We buy paper by the pallet and cut it to exact press-sheet size, typically within a thousandth of an inch, so the front and back of every page line up.

How many copies can you print?

Short runs from a handful of copies up to about 3,000, priced instantly in our online quote tool.

What binding options do you offer?

Perfect binding (40 pages to a 2″ spine), saddle stitch (8–80 pages), and coil binding (up to 400 pages), all done in-house.
