Supreme Court Rule 33 Booklet Format

Paid filings at the U.S. Supreme Court must be produced as bound booklets to the specifications of Rule 33.1. We print to that format:

The Physical Specs

  • 6.125" × 9.25" booklet — the mandated trim size
  • Saddle stitch or perfect binding — the two methods the Rule prefers, firmly bound along the left margin
  • Black text on opaque, unglazed 60 lb. text stock — the exact weight the Rule requires — with covers on sturdy 80 lb. cover stock, heavier than the 65-pound sheet the Rule names
  • Cover in the color Rule 33.1(g) assigns your filing — white petitions, orange oppositions, light-blue and light-red merits briefs, yellow replies, tan joint appendices, cream and green amicus briefs

Just add the background color your filing type requires to your cover artwork, and select Color for the outer cover in our quote tool — we print it edge to edge.

The Quantities

The Court requires 40 booklet copies filed for paid cases (plus one unbound copy), plus service copies for each party. We print the exact count you need — 42, 48, 55 — with no wasteful minimums and no setup fees.

Recent example: 42 copies of a 122-page Supreme Court booklet, printed and delivered for under $500.

What We Don't Do

We are printers, not attorneys. Word limits, typeface rules (Century family), and content requirements are governed by the Court's current rules — your PDF should arrive print-ready and compliant. We reproduce it faithfully at 2400 DPI, in the correct physical format, on deadline.

Always confirm current requirements against the Court's rules before filing.

Circuit Courts & State Appellate Filings

Most federal circuits and state appellate courts accept 8.5" × 11" briefs and appendices. We produce them the same way — short runs, fast, delivered.

Briefs & Appendices

Perfect bound — or coil bound where your court's rules allow it — at 8.5" × 11" or a custom trim, in the exact quantity the court and service list require. Supreme Court booklets are always saddle stitched or perfect bound per Rule 33.

How to Order a Rule 33 Booklet

  1. Open our quote tool and choose Perfect Bound.
  2. Enter a custom size of 6.125" × 9.25", your page count, and Black/White printing (color available if your filing includes exhibits).
  3. For the cover, choose None (or Matte) for UV coating — the Rule requires the text pages to be unglazed, and a flat, traditional cover finish is the norm at the Court.
  4. Enter your copy count — typically 40 for the Court plus your service copies.
  5. See your all-in price instantly, including delivery. Upload your print-ready PDF when you order.

Filing an 8.5" × 11" circuit or state brief? Use the same tool with your court's size. On a tight deadline or need covers in a specific Rule 33.1(g) color? Call us at 480-629-5162 — we'll confirm specs and timing before you commit.

Preparing Your Files

We accept print-ready PDF files. Set up your document at the finished page size (6.125" × 9.25" for Supreme Court booklets) with 0.125" bleed on all sides, and keep text at least 0.125" inside the trim line.
